Did GOPers Just Agree to Help Dems Desecrate the Confederate Memorial and Graves at Arlington?

For weeks, we have been warning that the Democrats' attempt to topple statues and rename military bases named after Confederate soldiers was an attempt to erase or rewrite our history.

When it comes to Democrat-written legislation, the devil is always in the details. They say that their bill is designed to do one thing, but tucked away in the legalese is a provision or clause that does something completely different.

We have read Elizabeth Warren's amendment in section 377 of the National Defense Authorization Act that was just approved by Democrats and Republicans. It would force the Pentagon to rename ten military bases because they bear the names of Confederate soldiers, that is true. And we have explained why that is little more than pointless virtue signalling.

But like always, the legislation doesn't stop there. What Warren's amendment actually says is that the Pentagon is required to "remove all names, symbols, displays, monuments, and paraphernalia that honor or commemorate the Confederate States of America (commonly referred to as the ‘‘Confederacy’’) or any person who served voluntarily with the Confederate States of America from all assets of the Department of Defense."

That is VERY different to what Warren and Democrats were originally pitching. This would go much further than just renaming bases.

Take Arlington National Cemetery as an example. A lot of people don't know this, but Arlington is actually administered by the Department of the Army, meaning that it is technically an "asset of the Department of Defense." Not only does Arlington Cemetery have a Confederate Memorial, but there are also 482 Confederate soldiers interred there. A literal reading of Elizabeth Warren's amendment would require that the memorial and all 482 bodies be removed from the cemetery because the language only exempts gravestones, and not the graves themselves…

This is what the GOP is calling a "reasonable compromise."

I was going to say that it gets worse, but I cannot think of anything more radical than exhuming civil war dead in order to posthumously punish them. And yet, that's what Warren's bill would demand. The amendment would also target civil war reenactments performed on Defense Department land, or in cooperation with the Pentagon. That is certainly a smaller subset of civil war reenactors, but the Pentagon does have men trained to reenact different aspects of the civil war, on both sides of the fight.

This amendment would also force military museums to remove what Warren calls Confederate "paraphernalia" from their exhibits. The Pentagon operates museums dedicated to the history five branches of the United States Military (Space Force doesn't have a museum yet). These museums tell the story of America's Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard and include exhibits telling the story of the Civil War. Warren's bill would require those museums be stripped of any mention of the Confederacy. She is literally trying to erase history.

America's academies and war colleges would also be barred from displaying any paintings depicting or commemorating the Civil War. Just think about that: Our military operates academies and war colleges to teach America's military history and develop the next generation of tacticians. But Warren's amendment would force them to take down any mention of the fact that the Civil War even happened…

There is no longer any doubt. This is literally an attempt to erase history. The amendment would literally require the exhumation of Civil War dead, the removal of Confederate monuments inside of graveyards, the removal of Confederate artifacts from museums, and the banning of Civil War paintings in America's war colleges. This is an attempt to make it like the Confederacy never existed at all.

Listen, I am not a southerner. I was born and raised in New Jersey. I am not a Confederate and I am glad that the Confederacy lost the war and the Union was reunited. You would think that would go without saying, but I will say it anyway…

But this amendment being pushed by Elizabeth Warren and the Republican Party is INSANE and must be stopped!

That is where this really gets disgusting. The Republicans are supporting this nonsense. 

The GOP put Elizabeth Warren's amendment to a vote in committee and every Republican except one voted for it, or abstained. The only Republican who voted against it was Josh Hawley (R-MO).

Now, Tom Cotton is coming out against this amendment after he realized just how radical it is. He didn't fight to stop the bill when it was in his committee, but now he is fighting with everything he's got to stop it from becoming law

And that is thanks to you. The GOP thought they'd be able to just slip this through without anyone noticing. They thought they'd be able to hide it deep in the 1,090-page Defense Department appropriations bill.

They were wrong. Together, we have sent hundreds of thousands of FaxBlasts demanding that they stop this madness, and it is working. Tom Cotton changing his tune and fighting back is a sign that the pressure is working.

Unfortunately, both parties want to rush this bill to the floor. They see that Warren's amendment is hemorrhaging support and that it is now or never if they want to get it passed.

That is why you must fight back and stop them now!
